Staff Reporter | Pro democracy activist Linda Masarira who has been kept in solitary confinement in Chikurubi Maximum Prison, today appeared in court shackled in leg irons, a development that, saw the court break into wailing.

The Transform Zimbabwe leader, Jacob Ngaruvhume and others were in attendance and witnessed disturbing scenes of injuries from ZRP abuses.

Many of the accused protestors who showed their injuries to the courts, were denied access to medication and it emerged some have not been treated since Saturday.

At the time of writing some were failing to sit down as can be seen in the pictures. Female activist Linda Masarira can be seen in leg irons (pictures).

When the accused revealed the injuries, the whole court erupted into weeping- it was turned into “a funeral” as both men and women failed to control themselves as they started crying after seeing the level of inhuman behaviour.

3 weeks ago the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission blasted the police and for the first time, revealed the cops have of a truth been violating peoples’ rights.

“We pray for the intervention of theimg-20160919-wa0010world that these sons and daughters be given urgent access to medical treatment,” Transform Zimbabwe said in a statement.

Meanwhile the magistrate blasted the prison officers. ZLHR lawyers filed an application seeking to declare the conduct of Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services as illegal and in violation of Section 53 of the Constitution. Magistrate Stan Mambanje, who is presiding over the trial of Masarira and 10 other Harare residents, who were arrested in July and charged with obstructing the free flow of traffic, granted the application and ordered ZPCS not to repeat such an ill treatment of Linda without the leave of the court. Section 53 of the Constitution provides that “No person may be subjected to physical or psychological torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.”
